Objectives
On completing this module students should be able to:- describe the basic physics underlying different imaging modalities including X-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound
- compare and contrast the benefits and drawbacks of different imaging techniques and discuss the applicability of each to different clinical situations
- apply their knowledge of image generation to inform the interpretation of medical images
- apply their knowledge of normal anatomy to inform the interpretation of medical images and to identify relevant abnormalities and pathologies
- discuss the compromise between radiation dose and image quality
Learning outcomes
On completing this module, students should have:
- Knowledge of different imaging techniques and the basic underlying physics of each
- Detailed knowledge of the clinical applicability of different imaging modalities
- Knowledge of how to approach the interpretation of medical images and relate them to normal anatomy and pathology

- Developing a systematic approach to the interpretation of X-rays
- Identifying the type of imaging techniques used and whether anatomy is normal or abnormal
- The use of the primary literature to determine the current state of medical imaging and recent advances
Syllabus
A 10 credit module for the BSc Clinical Anatomy programme which provides an opportunity to study different medical imaging techniques in detail. This module provides an opportunity to relate knowledge of human anatomy to medical imaging.
Subjects studied will include:
- generation of X-rays and tissue interaction
- interpretation of X-rays and special radiography techniques
- principles of computed tomography
- interpretation of cross-sectional anatomy as seen on medical images
- gamma radiation and positron emission tomography
- Techniques utilising non-ionising radiation - MRI and ultrasound

Student progress will be monitored throughout the module by keeping a record of student participation in discussions during practical sessions. This will provide informal assessment of student progress. There will also be formative MCQs provided on the VLE that will be monitored to provide further information regarding student knowledge and understanding. Any students not participating fully in practical classes or demonstrating a lack of knowledge and understanding will be asked to meet with the module manger to assess if there is a need for additional support.
