Objectives

Through practical workshops, students will develop advanced translation skills which will enable them to provide effective translation (English-Arabic-English) of various newspaper texts such as news reports, investigative features, editorials and specialist articles. Students should also be able to employ effectively cohesive devices relevant for each particular genre and have the capacity to undertake textual analysis.

Syllabus

The aim of this module is to develop a sense of the different formats and styles of writing that a newspaper reader can expect to encounter. It will provide students with: a) translation strategies: syntactic, semantic and lexical awareness in English and Arabic texts; b) an introduction to the principle of cohesion in translation and c) the ability to undertake linguistic analysis of texts. The module consists chiefly of reading and writing drills.
