Module summary

This module introduces the fundamental theoretical concepts of acoustics, psychoacoustics and the perception of sound that are relevant for Audiology Healthcare Scientists and underpin good clinical practice. The learning outcomes are relevant for students progressing to level 3.

Objectives

The aim of this module is :
1. To provide detailed knowledge of the principles of acoustics relevant to audiology. This knowledge of the physical aspects of sound will be taught alongside classical elements of sound perception,
2. To integrate learning in acoustics and sound perception to provide providing an understanding of how the physical attributes of sound are perceived in healthy people.
3. To understand how this knowledge relates to the diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing impairment.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will have:
1. Demonstrate a factual understanding of fundamental acoustical principles and of sound level measurements.
2. Explain the psychological and perceptual principles of human auditory perception and auditory scene analysis.
3. Describe the principle hearing mechanisms for human auditory spatial processing.
4. Describe fundamental principles relating to speech perception and speech production.
5. Relate psychoacoustic concepts to diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology.

Syllabus

This module is designed to broadly set out the fundamental physical and perceptual properties of sound. The subject matter equips the student with a basic understanding and appreciation of how sound is generated, transmitted measured and perceived. It covers, important aspects of the physics, psychophysics and psychology of auditory perception required by audiologists working in a clinical or research environment. The material covered is taught in an audiological context and relates to practical applications where necessary. It builds on level 1 taught modules such as ARCS1105, and is drawn on by all subsequently taught modules in the programme.

- Sound propagation
- Reflection, diffraction and reverberation
- Frequency resolution, frequency selectivity
- Temporal resolution
- Loudness/intensity perception
- Spatial processing
- Auditory Scene Analysis
- Speech perception
