Module summary

This is a compulsory Level 3 module for students on Audiology route of the BSc Healthcare Science programme. This module will provide the student with advanced knowledge and understanding of hearing services and a range of non routine audiology related populations, disorders, assessments and rehabilitation techniques.

Objectives

This module will explore audiology service delivery options and the evidence base surrounding the assessment and rehabilitation of children with hearing impairment and specialist hearing instruments. By the end of the module students will have gained knowledge of the following:
- Assessment and rehabilitation options for children with hearing impairment, including neonatal screening, and referral for specialist hearing instruments (including CIs, BAHAs)
- Multidisciplinary services
- Epidemiology of childhood hearing impairment
- Candidature and referral options for specialist hearing instruments

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

- Appraise and discuss service delivery, patient pathways and financial implications of assessment and rehabilitation of childhood hearing impairment
- Appraise and discuss the referral options for patients who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids
- Critically evaluate the management options for childhood hearing impairment, including the range of specialist hearing instruments available
- Discuss epidemiology in relation to childhood hearing impairment
- Evaluate and communicate the assessment and management needs of relevant specialist populations

- Evaluation and appraisal of assessment and rehabilitation of childhood hearing impairment
- Evaluation and appraisal of specialist hearing instruments


Syllabus

Topics covered include:

- Service delivery, patient pathways and financial implications of assessment and rehabilitation of children with hearing impairment
- Candidacy, referral, fitting and management of specialist hearing instruments (e.g. CIs, BAHAs)
- Epidemiology of childhood hearing impairment
- Impact of socioeconomic status, demography, prevention strategies)

Private study

Students will require private study throughout the module.

Students will be provided with directed reading prior to and following each lecture/seminar which will include relevant journal articles. Private study time will be required to retrieve, comprehend and summarise this reading. This will then be discussed in the following seminar.

Private study will also be required to prepare for the two assessments.
