Module summary
Exploring the relationship between gender and contemporary art practices in the context of East Asia is an emergent, if not nascent, field in an Anglophone world. This module takes seriously the potential in the sets of problematics that arise out of such attempts as a way to de-centre the broader discourses of art and cultural histories. What are the consequences of colonial experiences of the region in contemporary art practices and education? How do linguistic and cultural differences and similarities among the region challenge or facilitate the practices and appreciation of art? What are the ramifications of assuming abstract universalism in gender? The module explores these issues through select historical and cultural readings, contemporary theories, and analyses of select contemporary art.Cultural, historical, and linguistic knowledge of the region is not a pre-requisite. However, students are expected to be willing to make the module content relevant to their broader academic interests. In this light, each students’ sustained and energetic participation in seminar discussion is pivotal to their own learning outcome of the module. Objectives
The module explores issues such as roles of colonialism, differing definitions of art, and social context through select historical and cultural readings , contemporary theories, and analyses of select contemporary works of art.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, the students should be able to:
1. Synthesize readings from different humanities disciplines with confidence
2. Construct an informed and coherent interpretation based on the self-directed research, texts, and class discussions
3. Listen to and reason with others publicly on academic subjects
4. Approach unfamiliar objects and cultures with a self-reflectivity and critical thinking
Syllabus
There are three key terms we concentrate to situate the relationship between contemporary East Asian art and gender: ‘art’, ‘art museums and education’ and ‘gender’. We will spend three seminar meetings on each of the terms, where we explore historical knowledge in tandem with contemporary interjections and works. This module offers accumulative learning, rather than an abridged survey.
Topics which may be covered include
Problems of unevenness, the allure of evenness
What ‘art’ enabled and erased in Japan
The interpolated practices in Korea
Conceptualizing ‘Art’ of ‘East Asia’
The Avant-garde, institutions, and national narratives
The possibilities and limitations of national art histories
Making art and earning a living
Women’s movements and their consequences
Non-Political as a stance
Collaboration as a form of de-centring
