Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have a thorough understanding of each of the nine theoretical knowledge requirements of the UK part-FCL Private Pilot's Licence.
1. Principles of Flight
2. Aircraft General Knowledge
3. Meteorology
4. Human Performance and Limitations
5. Air Law
6. Operational Procedures
7. Radio-telephony Communications
8. Visual Navigation
9. Flight Planning and Performance

Skills outcomes
SKILL ELSEE 1: Understanding of the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering and a knowledge of professional codes of conduct. HOW MANIFESTED: P All aspects of aviation require a very high standard of professional and ethical conduct and these will be addressed throughout the human performance and limitation classes. S demonstration of knowledge in a compulsory University exam and voluntary Civil Aviation Authority exams.

SKILL ELSEE 5: Awareness of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health & safety, contracts, intellectual property rights, product safety and liability issues. HOW MANIFESTED: P identified by material covered by air law. S demonstration of knowledge in a compulsory University exam and Civil Aviation Authority exams.

SKILL ELSEE 6: Knowledge and understanding of risk issues, including health & safety, environmental and commercial risk, and of risk assessment and risk management techniques. HOW MANIFESTED: P addressed by the Operational Procedure topics. S demonstration of knowledge in a compulsory University exam and Civil Aviation Authority exams.

SKILL EP5: Knowledge of relevant legal and contractual issues. HOW MANIFESTED: P addressed by the Operational Procedure topics. S demonstration of knowledge in a compulsory University exam and voluntary Civil Aviation Authority exams.

Syllabus

Topics included will cover:
- Principles of Flight: the aerodynamics, stability and control of light aircraft.
- Aircraft General Knowledge: key light aircraft systems, including airframe, engine (fuel, ignition, lubrication and cooling) and cockpit instrumentation.
- Meteorology: the formation and the deciphering of forecasts of weather systems relevant to the safety of general aviation, including air masses and fronts, wind, cloud, visibility and icing.
- Human Performance and Limitations: the anatomical, physiological and psychological challenges of flight crew.
- Air Law: the UK, European and international legal frameworks that define aviation law.
- Operational Procedures: methods of regulatory compliance and operating standards in general aviation.
- Communications: radio telephony and phraseology relevant to flight under Visual Flight Rules inside and outside of controlled airspace.
- Navigation: basic theory, procedures and the use of ground-based radio aides to undertake accurate visual navigation.

Private study

This module requires a significant element of private study based on the specific course texts and tutorials. Both are based on a thorough understanding of the entire theoretical knowledge requirements of the UK part-FCL Private Pilot's Licence.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Regular tutorials and MCQ sessions on each of the nine core topic areas will allow students to test their knowledge in practical applications, whilst also supporting the provision of relevant formative feedback. Furthermore, mock CAA exams are offered for students to assess their readiness to take the actual CAA exams should they wish. Finally, students will have the opportunity to apply the taught material in preparation for the university exam.
