Module summary

As part of a BEng(Hons) degree for which accreditation is to be sought by an appropriate licenced institution of the Engineering Council, students must undertake a significant individual research based project. As such this is a compulsory module.

Objectives

The purpose of the module is for students to undertake an individual practical and/or research based project on an aviation topic.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Involve and operate effectively in individual project based tasks with the emphasis on further development of skills for communication and planning work effectively.
2. Work in an active learning environment and acquire the skills of conceptualising, problem solving, and comprehending engineering problems in aviation technology and related areas.
3. Apply logical reasoning based on a firm knowledge of engineering science and technology gained in earlier years.
4. Effectively communicate the outcomes of a major project undertaking in both written and verbal form.

Skills outcomes

P = practiced ACTIVELY, F= Formatively assessed, S = Summatively assessed.

SM1: P though investigation in individual project, F by submission of interim report, S by submission of dissertation and presentation.
SM2: P by analysis of data obtained by project experiments, either in lab or simulators, or data obtained by surveys applying appropriate statistical techniques, S by inclusion of experimental data in dissertation and subsequent discussion.
SM3: P by using engineering knowledge to tackle issues identified by project. S reporting of knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
EA3: P by use of relevant software such as CFD Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics and other software available for project use. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
EA4: P focus of individual project will be to encourage students to use their knowledge to implement an engineering or systems integrated approach to project topic. S reporting of knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
D2: P initial identification of issues via a research/problem statement which directly addresses these issues and further discussed/refined in weekly student/supervisor meetings. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
D3: P use appropriate tools to identify impact of such occurrences and/or explain and show what the effect is. S included in the project marking scheme.
D4: P through demonstration of appropriate choices in how to problem-solve in context of nature of individual project. F evidenced in the project interim report and S included in the project marking scheme.
D6: P by producing an Executive Summary within the dissertation for specific purpose to explain project and findings to a non-technical audience. S reporting in project dissertation and presentation.
ELSEE 1: P All aspects of aviation require a very high standard of professional and ethical conduct and will be addressed throughout project in weekly student/supervisor meetings. F weekly student/supervisor meetings.
ELSEE 2: P through weekly student/supervisor meetings and S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
ELSEE 5: P identified in the form appropriate to the specific project and discussed accordingly. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
ELSEE 6: P identified in the form appropriate to the specific project and discussed accordingly. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
EP1: P these topics pervade individual projects and students will be guided so they can adequately demonstrate them. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
EP4: P a literature review of the project topic is required. S reporting of such knowledge in project dissertation and presentation.
EP6: P Standard Operating Procedures feature extensively in Aviation and demonstration of how these apply to project will be required. S included in the project marking scheme.
EP7: P though changes to procedures (either experimental, simulations, surveys) as project progresses. F evidenced where appropriate by participation in use of the FNTPII and Airbus A320 simulators. S included in the project marking scheme.
EP8: P though design and adapted (experimental, simulation, survey) procedures to deal with uncertainty. S included in the project marking scheme.
AGS1: These aspects will be P and S throughout module as specified in other competencies.
AGS2: P through individual project where background reading will be required to understand individual requirements of project. S included in the project marking scheme.
AGS3: P through individual responsibilities in project. F evidenced in the project interim report and S included in the project marking scheme.
AGS4: P by demonstration of project progress and achievement. F evidenced in the project interim report, weekly supervision meetings and S included in the project marking scheme.

Syllabus

A range of aviation and aerospace projects will be on offer encompassing topics on aviation materials, the use of the University's A320 and FNPT2 CAA approved simulator and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, security and others. Students will work individually on the project and will present individual written reports on their own work including an interim report at the end of Semester 1 detailing the planning, execution, deliverables and safety aspects of the project in agreement with the project supervisor(s). The work will also be presented orally at the end of the second semester.

Private study

Students will be expected to manage their time and develop ideas to how to undertake their project based on either a topic provided for them or agreed in advance (including agreement on resources). They will attend weekly tutorial/guidance meetings with their project supervisor but in the main are expected to work on their topic in private study time.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback from a 400 word interim report submitted in S1 week 11 and feedback given in S2 week 2.
