Objectives

The main aim is to exercise experimental skills which are theoretically described in the lecture series of module BIOC 2301.
- This module introduces more advanced experimental designs and fosters greater independence in planning and execution of experiments.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students will be able to:
1. Understand, evaluate and apply sources of information when faced with a given problem;
2. Create own experiments and apply experimental details from scientific and other technical literature;
3. Understand concepts of controls and trouble shooting.
4. Execute more complicated series of experiments;
5. Remember the concepts of technical approaches used to answer biochemical questions;
6. Apply biochemical knowledge in practical situation;
7. Create records of experiments;
8. Analyse and critically evaluate experimental data and put them into a broader context of scientific literature in an extended report.

Syllabus

- To provide continued training in data collection, and the experimental techniques of modern biochemistry.
- Introduce understanding of more advanced experimental instrumentation.

Owing to the continuous and practical nature of assessments, no resit will be available in August for students who fail the module; students will be required to repeat the module, and all assessed coursework, as an internal candidate. All pieces of coursework should be considered as compulsory and their marks contribute to your overall module mark. In addition to summative coursework formative assignments will be given and their completion is a prerequisite for obtaining valuable feedback and is thus essential to the learning process. Failure to submit formative reports is likely to decrease the overall laboratory performance mark.
