Level 3 in Chemistry programmes of study or equivalent

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
(a) have an appreciation of important advanced topics in chemistry
(b) be able to solve deductive problems where appropriate
(c) be able to critically assess current chemical literature where appropriate

Learning outcomes
Students should become familiar with advanced topics and current research in a range of topical areas within chemistry.

Skills outcomes
Managing Self: Planning, time management

Syllabus

Eight different topics of 8-9 teaching sessions duration on aspects of advanced current chemistry will be given. Students will be required to submit coursework for two of the eight topics. Students are free to attend all topics if desired.

Topics may include:
- Organometallic Mechanisms and Transformations
- Energy Transduction – Powering the Earth, Life and Society
- Advanced Solid State Chemistry
- Asymmetric Synthesis
- Biological Chemistry
- Chemical Biology Tools
- Ultrafast Chemistry
- Molecular Dynamics
- Chemical waves and Oscillations
..... or other topical research areas.

In each topic lecturers will present current advanced chemistry and/or current research findings, referring students to the research literature where appropriate. Students will be required to read up to date research literature to advance their knowledge beyond the material presented in lectures.
