Module summary

Working on large scale engineering and infrastructure projects will require you to work with a vast variety of different individuals in changing organisational settings which are funded through various models. This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills to navigate this environment and successfully work in diverse project teams. It will enable you to understand organisational contexts of projects and how they are funded. You will also develop the ability to appraise the impact of organisation and funding on the individuals working on the project.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of key concepts relating to people working on and associated with projects as well as the organisation and funding of projects. This includes an understanding of organisational behaviour in the context of projects and programmes and stakeholder management/engagement. Furthermore, it aims to develop the students’ understanding of organisational contexts of projects incl. governance and commercial concepts and processes behind the funding of projects.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to
1. Appraise the components of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management) to guide their thinking and actions while working in and with project teams
2. Analyse project stakeholders and their interests and develop strategies on how to engage with them
3. Explain the reasons for, and advantages and disadvantages of different formal organisational structures
4. Develop and assess governance arrangements within various organisational structural contexts
5. Critique sources and types of funding relating to transport infrastructure from both private and public sector

Private study

*Verbal presentation: the students will present in groups of 5 students for 20 minutes plus 10 minutes feedback (0.5 contact hours); assumption of 100 students leads to 20 groups of 5 students and hence 10 contact hours in total to assess the presentation

Private study comprises of the following elements:
• 4 hours of reading per week during module delivery (4 weeks) = 16 hours
• Coursework preparation (80%): 80 hours to research and write project report (3,000 words)
• Verbal presentation preparation (20%): 29.5 hours to work in groups to research, prepare and practice the presentation (20 minutes for 5 students)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The students will receive prompt formative feedback on their work and progress during the four tutorials which are spread over the delivery of the module (4 x in 4 weeks). In week 4 there will be a specific focus on feedback on presentation and project report topics. A drop-in clinic will be held prior to report submission for students to attend and receive formative feedback on their work in progress.
