Module summary
This module will give students a basic understanding of how a digital camera works. They will learn how to compose a photographic image and how to expose a photograph correctly. Students will also gain critical insight through the study of existing photographic images. Students will produce a research report and analysis of the work of a contemporary photographer that will inform the production of a portfolio of their own images. Students will be expected to use their own digital camera for this module. - Please note that this module can only be chosen as an discovery module in Semester 1. - In Semester 2 the module is offered as an option to Level One Design students only.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to: demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of digital photography;
interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of an existing photographic image;
demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches in creating a photographic image for a specific application;
communicate the results of their work; demonstrate an awareness of the professional practice of photography

Syllabus
The module will give students a basic understanding of how a digital camera works, the rules of composition of a photographic image and how to expose a photograph correctly. Existing photographic images will be analysed and criticised to inform the students own practice. Professional applications of photography, such as reportage, fashion, product and fine art photography will be examined.
On completion of the module students will produce a research report and analysis of the work of a contemporary photographer that will inform the production of a portfolio of their own images. Students will be expected to have a digital camera with a minimum specification to be notified by the module manager.
