Module summary
This module allows students to extend their independent lines of research and discovery to expand their innovative garment collection, and realise prototype garments from this range, drawing on contemporary and future consumer needs and wants in a number of diverse ways. Students are encouraged to explore a range of technologies to support their toile making, silhouette development and fashion product design, culminating in a designed collection and prototype garments (2 outfits from the designed range). The module follows on from DESN 3578.Objectives
This module aims to develop and expand upon technical and practical skills acquired in Level 2 in module DESN 2667.Students continue with their individual and independent lines of research and enquiry from module DESN 3578 to expand and extend their innovation concept with additional design solutions which address a defined consumer need.
Learning outcomes
1. translate effectively from 2-dimensional design work to 3-dimensional form, using intellectual, creative and technical skills
2. Demonstrate individual and creative expertise within stated commercial parameters
3. Develop, evaluate and refine innovative design solutions which meet the needs of a specified consumer group
4. Communicate design thinking in appropriate visual and written form
5. Produce prototype garments which demonstrate the specified creative innovation concept
Syllabus
This module is principally concerned with the development of an innovative contemporary garment collection, which reflects a total individual concept, underpinned by original research. This module is not project based; therefore after negotiation and agreement with tutors, students will provide a comprehensive time management plan, which extends their original proposal in module DESN 3578.
In this module students will learn how to:
- conduct further development and experimentation to expand their designed range from 12 to 24 outfits (in response to feedback on the work submitted for DESN 3578)
- make an informed selection of two outfits from the designed range to make in final fabrics
- Perfect patterns for production, and test these in toile form
- Select appropriate fabrics and trims for innovative fashion products
- Create technical specifications to inform production
- Create costings for manufacture, depending on market level and as appropriate to the brand / consumer
- Make up two outfits from the designed range in final fabrics
