Module summary

This module prepares students for the process of devising and undertaking a major independent research dissertation at masters level. Through conducting an exploratory literature review, formulating and presenting a research proposal detailing research aims and objectives and time plan, the student is prepared to discuss the initial structure of their research proposals with their dissertation supervisor in DESN5315M Dissertation - Global Fashion Management.

Objectives

The role of the module is to provide an opportunity for students to gain an understanding and insight into the range of methodologies and methods which may be applied to design research. Lectures, seminars and workshops introduce students to a broad range of generic research methods, techniques and issues appropriate to fashion management, retail management and consumer behaviour. The module introduces students to the key competencies required to be a critical reader of research, utilising conceptual, practical, collaborative, reflexive and critical research and analysis skills key to problem definition and solving with the area of global fashion management.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of established research methodologies.
2. Distinguish between different methods of data collection and analysis.
3. Plan and develop an appropriate approach to the formulation of their own research design, appraising the selection of appropriate conceptual and practical tools.
4. Identify and critically evaluate contextual and empirical literature relevant to their research in the area of global fashion management.

Skills outcomes
· Gain an understanding in how to contextualise specific fashion management research in theoretical grounding.
· Formulate appropriate research questions which look to embed practical questions in a theoretically-informed framework.
· Plan relevant research design.
· Critically evaluate own research and that of others.

Syllabus

Students will attend lectures and tutorials relating to
· Research Planning, Design and Development Processes including the need for new knowledge, identification of research gaps, building theoretical foundations, research methodologies and research methods.
· Ethics in research

The module is assessed through two summative elements. 1. A visual and verbal presentation will allow the student to present their research proposal in a small group setting (4 students per presentation group). This presentation will be structured to include: · Introduction (encompassing the research problem and objective) · Theoretical Background (literature foundation). · Research methodology (rationale for the selection of method(s) including ethics concerns). · Research plan. · References. If for medical reasons, a student is not able to present to the small group of 4 students an alternative option of a tutor-student set-up will be provided. 2. A completed research proposal proforma including details regarding the proposals - Working Title, Research Aim, Research Objectives, Link to Key articles directing research focus, Research Methodology, Research Methods, Sample population, Possible respondents contact details (if industry focused), Timings/ Gant Chart etc. Both assessments will require students to examine an area of global fashion management based upon an exploratory literature review. This will enable the student to identify a research gap and elaborate a research problem and propose an appropriate methodological approach to conduct primary research related to the research gap identified. Resit is 40% by submission of a PowerPoint presentation and 60% by proposal proforma.
