Module summary

This module will introduce students to the oral environment predominantly in health, as normal tissues and oral structures. It aims to provide them with a knowledge of the anatomy and biology of the oral environment in order to give a grounding for their clinical practice.

Objectives

The student should gain knowledge of the anatomy of the facial structures & oral environment including; the facial skeleton, soft tissues, salivary glands and dental hard tissues encountered. The student should be able to identify individual teeth and be able to describe their morphological features and development. They will have a knowledge of the biochemical events that occur in living tissues, at both the molecular and cellular level. They will also be aware of the role of micro-organisms, especially those particularly related to the development of biofilms (plaque) within the oral environment, both in health and disease.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic head and neck anatomy including the teeth and supporting structures
2. Have a knowledge of tooth morphology and the stages of tooth development.
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of oral microbiology including dental biofilms and their clinical assessment.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the basic cell biology of oral structures including the role of principle molecules and the normal processes that occur in living cells.
5. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the physiology and biochemistry of saliva.

Skills outcomes
Ability to identify human tooth types.

- Basic cell biology
- Microbiology of the oral cavity
- Salivary biochemistry & physiology
- Tooth Morphology: tooth form, tooth identification, developmental stages/dates and tooth specific functions.
- Anatomy: anatomy of skull, head & neck, face, tongue, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, stomach.
