Module summary

This extended, in-depth clinical skills course provides you with scientific knowledge and practical experience to prepare you to treat more advanced dental disease and its outcomes. Integration of dental disciplines, including oral surgery, conservative dentistry, endodontics and removable prosthetics with basic sciences such as dental materials, anatomy and physiology will provide you with the necessary background to develop your clinical decision-making skills. You will undertake a wide range of simulated clinical techniques to restore badly broken-down teeth including those with pulpal and peri-radicular disease. You will be introduced to decision-making processes surrounding tooth loss and replacement. A strong thread of the current evidence base and scientific understanding underpins each element of the course. You will further develop an appreciation of changes in demands and expectations of your patients. You will be introduced to tooth removal (simple extractions) in a way which encourages you to consider the long-term implications of tooth loss. The concept of 'planning for failure' and long-term prognosis for various treatment options is explored in some depth.

Objectives

To further develop knowledge and understanding of the science that underlies clinical dentistry with particular emphasis on management of severely broken down teeth, pulpal pathology in multirooted teeth, and tooth loss and replacement. Applied knowledge of dental materials and provision of restorations that will be long-lasting and contribute to a healthy and maintainable oral environment.

To build upon the basic clinical skills learned in year 2, with particular focus on extra coronal restorations, multi rooted endodontics, simple extractions and fixed and removable prostheses in preparation for the treatment of real patients.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and clinical skills necessary to provide non-surgical root canal treatment of permanent teeth in a simulated environment.

2. Demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and simulated clinical skills necessary to plan and provide extra coronal restorations in permanent teeth which preserve tooth structure, maintain function, are long lasting, and promote soft and hard tissue health.

3. Understand the need for and the options available for replacement of teeth in a partially dentate patient. Have knowledge of
the clinical and laboratory stages involved and plan provision of these in both fixed and removable form.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the materials used in provision of root canal treatments, extracoronal restorations and partial dentures.

5. Understand the laboratory stages involved in fixed and removable restorations and prostheses and the importance of effective communication with the dental laboratory.

6. Understand the need and process of assessment of teeth prior to extraction, extraction techniques and common post-operative complications. Execute simulated simple extractions.

Syllabus

Indications, treatment planning, clinical and laboratory stages of:

Extra-coronal restorations (including crowns and onlays)
Fixed bridges
Partial dentures.

Indications and techniques for managing pulpal pathology in multi-rooted permanent teeth:

Pain management
Orthograde endodontics
Restoration of the root filled tooth.

Introduction to the theory of functional occlusion.

Planning for tooth loss and replacement of missing teeth.

Indications for tooth removal and simple extraction techniques.

Applied knowledge of dental materials.

Treatment Planning Seminar:

In groups of three to five, students will be required to prepare a treatment plan for a given case and present to the group for open discussion, guided by the tutor but led by the students.
