Module summary
This module prepares students for the management of a medical emergency in the dental setting. Teaching methods are interactive, using a multi modal approach blending theory and practice to ensure skill transfer to the clinical setting.Feedback, including audio visual and peer feedback, is threaded through the module to support the student in their personal development when considering the complexities of medical emergency management in the dental setting and the acquisition of skills. The purpose built high fidelity simulation suite forms the back drop of the practical simulation session. This facility affords students the opportunity to participate in scenarios which are based on reported clinical events from the dental setting. Contextualised scenarios facilitate immersive participation giving students a tangible experience of medical emergency management in an environment that is safe and supportive. Best practice recommendations have been developed by the School of Dentistry and the Leeds Dental Institute to reflect the clinical needs of patients in the dental setting. All guidance is underpinned by National Institute of Clinical Excellence, General Dental Council, Care Quality Commission and British National Formulary for dentistry guidance. Objectives
To provide the knowledge, skills and practical opportunity to demonstrate the core standards required for the early recognition and management of the acutely unwell patient in the dental setting. This module will allow the student to apply to clinical practice, the ABCDE assessment and the best practice guidance recommendations for the management of dental medical emergencies. Students will be able to analyse the ABCDE assessment findings to develop and evaluate a patient centred management planLearning outcomes
On completion of the module the students will be able to;
• Perform an efficient ABCDE assessment on a simulated patient
• Analyse the ABCDE assessment findings to construct a management plan for the safe and effective treatment of the unwell simulated patient.
• Demonstrate effective use of the medical emergencies equipment for precise management of the presenting simulated condition.
• Demonstrate professionalism encompassing leadership, teamwork, communication, situational awareness, delegation and escalation in the coordination of a medical emergency.
• Critically appraise personal performance in line with assessment criteria.
Skills outcomes
Application of the ABCDE and patient assessment
Situational leadership, teamwork and delegation
Communication
Injection techniques
Oxygen delivery and management
Administration of medication such as adrenaline auto injector, salbutamol and GTN.
Syllabus
• ABCDE assessment – understanding each element and the recognition of associated signs and symptoms.
• Common conditions related to the dental setting. A didactic overview of the aetiology and clinical presentation.
• Medical emergencies equipment skill station. A practical demonstration followed by candidate practice and participation, ensuring candidates are familiar and skilled at handling the emergency equipment.
• Two Simulation sessions which involve the candidate being presented with a medical emergency scenario, formatted to replicate the working environment. First simulation session is designed to facilitate the sequential application of the ABCDE with the use of the quick reference guides. The second simulation session offers increasing scenario complexity with the expectation that students will be moving towards technical mastery in the management of the unwell patient in the dental setting.
• Assessment: Students will be required to undergo a formal practical medical emergency assessment. This will be a progressional assessment. The assessment period is expected to begin in term two (Jan/Feb).
Assessment is required to ensure that adequate standards are being achieved. An assessment tool will be used to ensure that a good standard of practice is achieved
The practical assessment will take place in the medical emergency simulation room. The student will be expected to manage a medical emergency scenario taking place in the dental setting. Each student will be randomly allocated a scenario in advance by a member of staff not directly involved in the assessment process.
Candidates will be assessed ensuring students have met the required minimum standard for the safe management of medical emergencies in the clinical setting.

Private study
A wide range of online resources are available to students via Minerva. These include; interactive web site Dent-aim, e-learning package, case study practice files, videos of previous medical emergency simulation assessments.
Policy documents that have informed the quick reference guides are also available.
Links to Resuscitation UK and their resources are also available.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback is the corner stone of the ME training and is used in a variety of ways.1. During lectures, interactive format allow for feedback through discussion and questioning during the planned activities.
2. During the skill station, formative feedback is given in relation to skill acquisition
3. Following simulation; peer feedback is used to evaluate progress and establish next steps for learning. This is enhanced with AV review and verbal feedback from the facilitator. Each student leaves with a peer assessment document and personalised next steps for learning.
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Practical | Formal practical medical emergencies scenario presented to the student in the high fidelity dental simulation suite. Individual 10 minute scenarios will be allocated with performance assessed against an agreed assessment criteria. Scenarios reflect the common conditions relevant to dentistry. The assessment is progressional with resit opportunities. | 100.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
The format of this assessment may be subject to change as a result of restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic but the learning outcomes will remain unchanged and approval of the appropriate PSRB (Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies) will be obtained.
