Module summary
This module will provide a comprehensive overview of the ionising radiation regulations in the UK and their application in practice. The use of 2D and 3D imaging modalities employed in the dental and maxillofacial region will be explored including digital radiography, Cone Beam CT and MRI, together with their use in the diagnosis of common pathologies in the dental and maxillofacial region. The module will be delivered using a blended approach with asynchronous recorded lectures and synchronous seminars and tutorials to consolidate learning. There will be a formative in-course assessment as well as an end of module summative assessment.Objectives
The module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ionising radiation regulations in the UK and their application in practice, the 2D and 3D imaging modalities employed in the dental and maxillofacial region and the principles of diagnosis and interpretation of pathologies in the dental and maxillofacial region.Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the UK ionising radiation regulations and their application in clinical practice
2. describe the modalities employed in imaging of the dental and maxillofacial region
3. describe and interpret common pathologies of the dental & maxillofacial region on multiple imaging modalities

Syllabus
This module will include the following topics:
- The statutory ionising radiation regulations in the UK and their application in clinical practice
- 2D and 3D imaging in the dental and maxillofacial region including digital radiography, MRI and Cone Beam CT
- diagnosis of common pathologies of the teeth and jaws
- diagnosis and interpretation of facial trauma and pathology affecting the temporomandibular joints
- diagnosis and interpretation of the salivary glands

Private study
Students will be required to read specified books and papers on the reading list. They will be required to have accessed the asynchronous lectures prior to the seminars and topics relating to those subject areas covered in the asynchronous lectures. They will also be required to prepare presentations on set subject matter to present at the seminars and tutorials.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
