Entry to MSc in Dental Materials or MSc in Digital Dentistry.

Module summary

Dental materials are developing all the time, particularly as new ways of processing them have emerged with parallel advances in dental technology. This module introduces the field of dental materials science focussing on contemporary dental materials and how they are used clinically or in the dental laboratory as part of a digital workflow. With lectures supported by tutorial sessions the module will provide students the opportunity to further develop their critical and analytical abilities and communication skills.

Objectives

As this module could be taught to students from different backgrounds it will provide grounding in polymers, metals, cements, ceramics and composites to better understand how their beneficial properties can be applied to dentistry and bring the students to a common level of understanding. The module content will ensure all students are sufficiently versed in materials sciences necessary for a complete understanding of the range of dental materials encountered.

This module then aims to provide the student with current knowledge of the field of contemporary dental materials such that upon completion the student would be able to carry out further research into the subject.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the sciences that underpin modern dental materials.

2. Display a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary dental materials.

3. Show a deep appreciation of the development of dental materials in relation to technological advances.

4. Critically appraise regulatory requirements in relation to dental materials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students can use time in the tutorials to obtain formative feedback ahead of their summative presentations and to check progress of dissertation.

Essay topic to be agreed with module lead to include two of the 4 learning outcomes. Verbal presentations are made during the seminars; one each on the remaining two learning outcomes. The requirements for both of these will be given at 1/1 and both (two presentations) agreed between the student and staff in the immediate weeks after set. Students can use time in the tutorials to obtain formative feedback ahead of their summative presentations and to check progress of dissertation. Essay and presentations must cover different learning outcomes as agreed with individual students. Peer feedback will be verbally given after the presentations following a prescribed format and criteria with the opportunity for group discussion. Written tutor feedback will also be provided. Assessments are non-compensatable.
