Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- identify and describe contextual features which influence, and are influenced by, the work of TESOL teachers and learners in general, and in their own context in particular;
- identify observational and other relevant data on which to base those descriptions;
- relate these descriptions to a variety of theories and approaches;
- begin to conceptualise/plan approaches and methodologies, which are appropriate for their own contexts, based on an increased and critical awareness.

Syllabus

This module aims to introduce participants to a wide range of issues relating to the contexts in which TESOL occurs and the implicit or explicit approaches used in those contexts. These will include:

- the concept of 'context';
- notions of culture - from classrooms to broader spheres;
- an historical perspective on TESOL approaches;
- the classroom micro-context - the people, the place, the physical features;
- managing changes in education/classrooms over time.

Additional to this, the module aims to enable participants to develop a number of skills which are important in looking critically at classroom behaviour and language teaching approaches. These will be developed through:

- observing and describing classrooms using video extracts and examining educational documents;
- interpreting those observations with regard to various aspects of context.
