Module summary

This module will develop student’s leadership skills and research capacity. It has two parts:Part 1. Change Leadership Portfolio (20%) Using experiential and reflexive methods we will explore cutting-edge approaches to collaborative leadership. Old models of heroic leadership no longer suit the complex, fast moving urban world we have created. Instead, self-awareness, emotional intelligence and team work are coming to the fore. This module will explore these issues and how participants can enhance their leadership skills. This part of the module is delivered in partnership with human relations specialists. Part 2: Research Project (80%) This builds on all previous learning to produce an original piece of research centred on a live urban problem identified by students, partner cities and dissertation supervisors. We will work with students to build up contacts and draw on existing networks such as C40 cities, to identify problems and partner organisations that will benefit from the research. The central focus of the piece will be achieving transformation across urban systems and research questions will be built around this goal. There is substantial opportunity for partnership and co-supervision from external organisations in this element of the programme.

Objectives


Old models of heroic leadership no longer suit the complex, fast moving world we have created. Instead, self-awareness, emotional intelligence and team work are coming to the fore. Part one of his module will explore these issues and how students can enhance their leadership skills. With sessions strategically placed throughout the year, the Leadership for Sustainability module will help students to identify their skills and strengths together with the qualities they wish to develop further. There will also be a heavy emphasis on values and the relational qualities needed to promote and maintain sustainability at the personal, community and global levels. This element of the module will be delivered in partnership with external human relations specialists.
Part two of this module forms the major research project. Drawing on real sustainability issues identified by UK and International cities students will deliver a piece of change oriented research concerning how to retrofit sustainability into existing city systems. The choice of research topic remains with the student but students will be offered real problems by national and international partners such as C40 Cities. We aim to have external input into most of the major research projects.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
Develop skills of self-reflection and leadership for change.
Undertake deep research and produce detailed assessments of how sustainability can be retrofitted into existing systems.

Private study

Private study for this module will consist of reading, preparation and execution of the supervised final research project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

For part 1 (leadership) Self and Peer Assessment – Students will prepare a self-assessment of your their performance against key Leadership for Sustainability qualities. They will then receive feedback from a group of peers. The peer group, supported by the module leader where necessary will either validate the self-assessment or ask students to resubmit..
For Part 2 The planning and reading for the major project will be undertaken throughout the degree and module leaders and colleagues across the faculty will be asked to supervise students where appropriate. We will retain an international partner (currently C40 Cities) to provide links into global cities for the generation of research project ideas and contacts. Dissertation planning will be an element of Part 1 (change leadership skills).
