Objectives

1. To understand the role of the social worker in relation to the Professional Capabilities Framework and the Standards of Proficiency
2. To reflect on and assess own development and establish plans for continued own development.
3. To integrate learning, making connections between academic material and practice
4. To develop the student's capacity for gathering information, analysing and problem solving.
5. To develop the student's confidence to contribute and communicate in a team environment.
6. To complete a Readiness to Practice process.
7. To complete practice skills development days and activities.

Learning outcomes
1. Students will develop an understanding of how academic learning informs social work practice.
2. Students will develop an understanding of self, interpersonal skills and learning styles and the implications for self and social work practice.
3. Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding and ability to take responsibility for their own learning and development, including using constructive feedback, reflective journals and learning highlights

Syllabus

- Readiness to Practice - what is it and how do we do it? The Professional Capabilities Framework and Standards of Proficiency
- Influences of personal, historical and environmental factors on communication such as race, gender sexuality, class, ability culture, attitudes / beliefs, stereotypes, including the application of this understanding as anti-oppressive practice with service users.
- Rogers core conditions, self-awareness, Johari Window, reflective listening and questioning techniques
- Service user and carer perspectives across client groups
- Linking theory to practice; use of reflective journals and learning highlights. The context of social work practice and the management of placements
- Assessment, planning and review - 'strengths, needs, resources' and exchange models
- Building skills in managing differences in communication needs
- Task centred practice.
- Behaviourist models of practice
- Group work theory and practice
- Advocacy and empowerment
- Assertiveness, managing service user / carer interviews, aggression and constructive feedback

Online research of relevant practice, legislation and policy guidance e.g. SCIE resources, HCPC guidance, College of Social Work resources and the Professional Capabilities Framework
Reading to support practical work and to complete academic tasks.
Keeping up to date with developments in practice through professional journals and national media.

You will be required to complete 10 reflective journals during your skills days' activities. This equates to one for every day of your skills days' activities. Formative feedback on a sample of these will be given by your tutor. Completion of all 10 is one of the conditions of passing the readiness to practice interview. The reflective journals should be academically referenced as this will aid you in writing your 2000 word summative essay.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be supported and monitored in the teaching sessions for the module.
In addition they will be monitored and supported on placement by their personal tutor.
They will also be monitored via their individual and group tutorial sessions with their personal tutor.
In Semester One, students will complete a formative video interview exercise with peers and a reflective study of this will be discussed in tutor groups. This will help them to prepare for the summative video exercise.

Tutors will offer formative feedback on a sample of your reflective journals while on skills days' activities.

Students will complete a summative video recorded interview with a service user and a 500 word reflection on this. This will be completed on a pass/fail basis. Students will complete a 30 minute Readiness to Practice interview. The interview will be completed on a pass /fail basis. Students will complete a 2000 word summative assignment on their experiences of placement in relation to elements of the PCF, KSS, knowledge and skills and HCPC professional standards of practice. All elements of the module have to be passed to complete the module. There is no compensation between assessment elements. Students will have a maximum of two attempts at each element of assessment Readiness to Practice interview format; In year one assessment of Readiness to Practice is done via an assessment in a 30 minute individual interview with one member of staff and one other person either staff, service users /carers or placement agency staff to determine whether the student has met the required standard to go out on practice placement. In line with Social Work Reform Board guidance the individual interview process will be monitored and quality assured by the Practice Assessment Panel which includes representatives from service users, carers and employers The assessment includes the following:- i) Satisfactory evidence of 'shadowing' an experienced social worker ii) Satisfactory completion of the skills days' activities (which includes the 10 journals) iii) A satisfactory DBS check undertaken by the University of Leeds. iv) A satisfactory Self Declaration of Health and Occupational Health screening v) A satisfactory understanding of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for students vi) A satisfactory understanding of the HCPC Guidance on Standards of Proficiency vii) A satisfactory understanding of the Professional Capabilities Framework viii) A satisfactory understanding of Service Users and Carers perspectives. ix) Satisfactory attendance.
