Module summary

Looking for an opportunity to undertake you own research, in a structured and supported way? This module allows you to write history on a topic of your choice, making use of primary sources that are available online, in the library, or in local archives. You do not need have to have a project in mind already to take this course, as the teaching will guide you through the process of developing an idea into research questions, finding sources, refining your project, and presenting your work. Your unique piece of historical research will be publically available through the University's wiki pages.You will be taught through a mixture of seminars, on-line materials, reflective writing, workshops, and group supervision with a mentor. In most weeks you will have a one hour workshop, and throughout you will be encouraged to discuss your project with other students on the course.The module is entirely assessed by coursework, and equal weighting in the final module mark is given between your reflection and planning of your research and your final project.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- Discover, evaluate, and utilise primary source material (both online and available in libraries and archives).
- Construct and complete a research project based upon primary and secondary sources.
- Develop and employ information literacy and research skills.
- Understand the issues relating to the process of historical research and publication.

Learning outcomes
- Each student will enhance their historical knowledge of the subject they choose to write and publish on.
- Understand and experience the process of historical research.


Syllabus

The overall aim of the module is to publish a piece of independent study on a historical topic, theme or person in the University's wikipedia.

The modules takes students through the process of historical research:

- Identifying topics and developing research questions
- Discovering and evaluating sources
- Making use of bibliographic and data management tools
- Discussion and supervision of research topic based
- Presentation of coursework.

This module will involve a group of postgraduate mentors acting to support the module leader and provide more detailed subject expertise.

Private study

Independent on-line learning consists of:
- Maintaining their online learning log;
- Engaging with set formative online tasks;
- Work on catalogues and digital repositories identifying and evaluating resources for use in their project.

Private Study consists of:
- Preparation of project proposal (including evaluative component);
- Research, preparation, and presentation of research project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored via:

- Project proposal exercise.
