Module summary

The module develops understanding of current practice and policy developments in the context of perspectives on the state and its role in family welfare. Teaching methods include lectures, case studies, videos and group-based problem-solving exercises.

Objectives

To understand and critically review the development of social policy in relation to children and families

Learning outcomes
1. Describe the development of social policy related to children and families
2. Demonstrate contemporary knowledge of recent changes to social policy and the ability to assess these policy developments
3. Explain the drivers and reasons for changes in social policy related to children and families
4. Discuss the impact of intervention in families by the State.

Syllabus

The content will cover such areas as:
This module aims to examine critically the development of child and family policy. It will explore the theoretical framework for understanding intervention in the family from differing perspectives.
-Opportunity to draw on ongoing work experience and to apply and test learning in the work setting.

Private study

Time for private study is expected to break down as follows:
Independent Online Learning
VLE preparation for seminars – 35 hours
Web-based research – 48 hours
Total 83 hours

The use of blended learning will require the students to engage in weekly preparation at their own pace. The students will be encouraged to use the online materials and read appropriate texts, academic books and peer review articles to expand their learning. They will also be encouraged to develop learning sets to enhance their own learning experience.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the follow up seminars. There will also be staged assignments to monitor progress. Access to tutors is also available via tutorials and e-mail.
