Module summary

This module will help you understand your own location and identity within a wider cultural context. You will be introduced to an interdisciplinary approach to study and learn how to think critically and reflectively. You will also consider some of the theories around identity, prejudice and discrimination, and equality and diversity and be encouraged to apply these understandings to different contexts.

Objectives

This is an introductory module that will introduce theories of identity, oppression and diversity, using an interdisciplinary approach.

The module will enable students to understand a variety of cultural, critical and sociological theoretical approaches through an application to a variety of different contemporary case studies in order to build analytic and critical skills in the consideration of issues of identity, oppression and diversity from a wide range of perspectives.

It will promote critical engagement with the literature devoted to the different disciplines and will seek to encourage students to reflect upon, and locate themselves, in a wider cultural context.

Learning outcomes
1. explain and discuss theories relating to identity, discrimination and diversity
2. apply theoretical insights in relation to identity, discrimination and diversity to the analysis of contemporary issues and case studies
3. analyse a newspaper article, paying attention to language use and narrative
4. use academic research to build up an evaluative argument

The module will cover:

-Identity theory
-Theories of prejudice, discrimination and oppression
-Examples of identity exploration, oppression and institutional oppression
-Diversity in the workplace
-Inequalities and ways to work towards equality

Private study

A key part of this module is independent learning. Every week set reading and viewing will be set, along with guidance questions which are initially discussed in the workshop - this material is to be prepared for the weekly seminars. Students are then encouraged to further share your thoughts and ideas on the online discussion board, to enable you to develop your analytic and writing skills and learn with and from others. Finally, the assignments on the module will require wider reading, so students are guided and encouraged to develop their wider reading and research skills (in preparation for the seminar discussions and for the assignments).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be given on discussion board posts throughout the module, to enable students to develop their analytic and writing skills. Students will also get an opportunity to submit a plan and draft for each assignment. Further, formative feedback on the development of critical thinking will take place in seminars and workshops - and assignment guidance seminars and workshops will give a further opportunity for formative feedback.
