Module summary
This module aims to develop students' understanding of the nature and complexities of learning and the implications for lifelong education. It will do this through a variety of methods including detailed observation, group discussions, lectures and seminars.Students will be made aware of some of the ongoing debates about learning and will be required to explore different perspectives and approaches.Objectives
Explore psychological, social and environmental aspects of learning in relation to relevant theories of learningAppreciate learning as a complex activity
Analyse the relationship between the nature of learning and the process of teaching.
Learning outcomes
1. Identify and show understanding of a range of theories of learning
2. Demonstrate an understanding of learning as a complex activity
3. Demonstrate an understanding of psychological, social and environmental factors which affect learning
4. Apply theories to own experience and in relation to different learners and contexts
Skills outcomes

- The Learning environment, including social and emotional factors impacting on learning
- Introduction to theories of learning; behaviourism, cognitivism, social constructivism, humanism
- Intelligence and learning styles
- Motivation
- Memory and learning
- Attention, perception, concentration and learning

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in and contributions to lecture and seminars, and via formative feedback on reflective writing and assignment drafts.
