Students will need to be prepared to engage in a coaching/mentoring relationship. This can be either in business or in education.

Module summary

This module is for students who are interested in or will be involved with coaching and mentoring others in a workplace/practice setting. It will be delivered in 2 parts: - part 1 will seek to differentiate between the roles of coaching and mentoring and to critically explore theories and models available. In this section ethical issues will also be considered. - In part 2 students will apply their learning to a coaching/mentoring situation, and reflect on the practical interpersonal skills required in such roles.This module is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Students who successfully pass the module will receive a CMI level 5 award in Management Coaching and Mentoring.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to enable students to take on a coaching and mentoring role within a workplace/practice setting.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to :

LO1 Articulate the similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring;
LO2 Critically evaluate the theories and models around coaching and mentoring;
LO3 Understand some of the ethical issues concerned in coaching and mentoring;
LO4 Consider how theories and models of coaching and mentoring map on to their own coaching and mentoring practice;
LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of how the working environment affects their practice;
LO6 Demonstrate practical interpersonal skills around being an effective coach or mentor;
LO7 Reflect critically on their own performance as a coach or mentor.

Skills outcomes
Improved skills in: listening, reflection, giving feedback, summarising, action planning and developing others' potential.

As part of this module, students will develop a range of digital literacy skills. Further details are provided in the module handbook


Syllabus

In this module students will be introduced to the similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring. They will critically evaluate the theories and models available to them and will be encouraged to consider how these map on to their own practice.

Students will also become aware of the ethical issues concerned in such roles. They will have the opportunity to look at a current or past situation they face or have faced, as well as to practice the interpersonal skills required. Students will be expected to reflect critically on their own performance through keeping a reflective journal.
