Module summary

The module provides knowledge and develops skills to understand and to be able to critically assess the role of effective global leadership for the management of large and small multinational enterprises in dynamic and uncertain business environments. The major implications for global leadership in rapidly changing business environments in national and sub-national locations is also examined. The module includes examination of the personality and behavioural traits associated with global leadership and how global mindsets and developing managerial knowledge and skills facilitate effective management of multinational enterprises. At the outset, and through a test using the Workstyle Personality questionnaire (WPQ) or 16 Personalities Test, this module will facilitate a self-evaluation of each student’s personality in terms of leadership. This approach is designed to locate the individual within the leadership field from the outset and the result will be used as a reference point for the student in the self-reflective essay.

Objectives

This module will develop students’ understanding of those leadership qualities, characteristics and behaviours that are key for success in international business and management, in a world that places ever more value on such issues as sustainability, ethical practice and diversity and, like never before, is required to take account of rapid socio-economic and technological change. The module will develop knowledge to understand the importance of global leadership in a dynamic and uncertain global environment and develop an understanding and self-awareness about the skills and competencies that are required to be effective leaders in such environments.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Critically assess how the core theories and concepts in leadership studies apply to contemporary issues in international business and relate to the effective management of multinational enterprises.
2. Evaluate the implications for interacting with different styles of global leadership within different national, subnational business and firm-level environments.
3. Analyse views on developing global mindsets and managerial knowledge and skills that are compatible with meeting the major challenges of global leadership.
4. Systematically assess and apply the major issues for global leadership of managing corporate change in a dynamic and uncertain international business environment that faces such issues.
5. Appraise how to develop global leadership competencies by reflection, self-awareness and action planning.

2. Effects of differences in leadership styles in different cultural and institutional contexts.
3. Key personal and behavioural characteristics for effective global leadership.
4. Global leadership and effective management of change in multinational enterprises in a changing international business environment.
5. Developing global mindsets and effective management of teams for multinational enterprises.

Private study

Reading articles, lecture materials and case studies, writing learning diary and reflective essay.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be required to keep a ‘Learning Diary’ which will feed into the final summative reflective essay. This diary will provide the basis for on-going self and peer formative assessment, with feedback from peers and tutors during group sessions.

Learning materials available via Minerva will also provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback and short exercises on key issues in global leadership).
