Module summary

This module provides the opportunity to identify and develop research in an area of interest, and produce a document of up to 12,000 words. This includes a (up to) 10,000 word dissertation and a (up to) 2,000 word dissemination report translating the dissertation findings for practitioners/policymakers. You are supported in this endeavour by a supervisor who will work with you on a small group and one-to-one basis at key points throughout the process.

Objectives

This module is the capstone of the MSc Management programme. It enables management students to develop a research proposal; to select, evaluate, analyse and synthesise the literature; and to carry out the research to demonstrate their ability to plan and manage the research process in order to answer a research question

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate literature relevant to the research question(s)
2. Plan and carry out appropriate research in line with practical, methodological and ethical constraints and structures
3. Synthesise literature and other collected data to produce a document clearly expressing the research process undertaken
4. Translate the findings of the academic dissertation into a report suitable for policymakers and/or practitioners

- The ability to select and critically analyse academic and other literature
- The ability to collect data and analyse the data to address a research question
- The ability to identify relevant research questions and to plan and carry out research to address them
- The ability to present complex information effectively in writing for academic and non-academic audiences

This module is supported by the Research Methods module as well as specific sessions covering topic selection and development, data management and good academic practice.

Private study

As this is a dissertation module students are expected to work independently to identify, design and carry out a research project with the guidance of a supervisor. There will be a minimum of 5 and maximum of 7 opportunities throughout the process for students to meet with their supervisor (some small group, some one-to-one).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students attend meetings with the supervisor throughout the process and monitoring of progress and feedback provided. Drafts of the introduction, literature review and methodology sections will be reviewed once by the supervisor, and written feedback provided
