Module summary

This module will introduce students to two of the main areas of medical physics, namely diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy. The module will illustrate different methods of diagnostic medical imaging, and describe the principles of treatment and treatment planning of cancer using radiotherapy. The module is intended to appeal to those who might be interested in a career in medical physics, and there are a number of follow-on medical imaging modules at level three which will further develop students’ knowledge of medical physics.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
This module will introduce students to the field of medical physics, providing an understanding of selected diagnostic medical imaging modalities and their applications. It will also introduce radiotherapy, describing how ionising radiation can be used in the treatment of cancer and how medical imaging is used in the planning of radiotherapy.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
• Describe selected aspects of human anatomy and physiology that can be targeted using medical imaging
• Describe the scientific principles underpinning three selected medical imaging modalities in the image formation process, and apply these principles to explain the appearance of selected medical images
• Provide examples of the use of medical imaging in a healthcare setting
• Describe how cancer can be treated using radiotherapy

Syllabus

Three diagnostic medical imaging modalities will be introduced through the physical principles of image formation and exemplar clinical applications where each modality is used.
The principles of radiotherapy planning and treatment.
