Module summary

This module equips students with the knowledge, skills, support and experience to undertake medical education research that is relevant, robust, and can inform future medical education practice and research.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...

- understand how to perform a comprehensive search of the literature.
- have a working knowledge of different online search tools.
- be able to manage search results.
- be able to correctly reference cited material.
- have integrated and reinforced knowledge and understanding from multiple sources including taught modules and relevant literature.
- have developed understanding of a range of research approaches and methods available to medical education researchers
- have developed generic research skills including methodological and ethical procedures and awareness
- have developed an appreciation of challenges associated with undertaking research or robust evaluation studies
- have developed an understanding of ways to address the challenges associated with undertaking research or robust evaluation studies
- have learnt project and time management skills, and team working skills, by undertaking a complex and prolonged piece of work.
- have developed verbal and written communication skills.
- have developed critical reading and writing skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the rationales underpinning different types of research approaches and designs;
2. Discuss the potential strengths, limitations and applications of a range of research studies
3. Demonstrate the application of different online search tools.
4. Manage search results.
5. Demonstrate how to correctly reference cited material.
6. Describe the process of undergoing a research/evaluation project
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges in doing such a project, and ways to address them
8. Consider the importance of high quality research and evaluation in healthcare
9. Explain the role of research ethics and governance arrangements in such projects
10. Demonstrate verbal and written presentation skills
11. Demonstrate the ability to synthesise information from multiple sources
12. Demonstrate the ability to critique literature and question received opinion


Syllabus

This module will introduce students to the research methods and skills which they will then apply to plan and undertake a successful medical education research project.
Early teaching sessions will cover the following topics:
Formulating a research question
Engaging stakeholders in research
Choosing a research design
Identifying and addressing ethical issues
Choosing and using quantitative research methods
Collecting and analysing qualitative research data
Literature searching
Critical reading and writing

Students will work with a supervisor to apply learning from the taught sessions to design a medical education research project, obtain ethical approval, and undertake the research.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Several opportunities for verbal and written feedback are built into this module, including 2 practice presentation sessions, a minimum of 6 supervision meetings, and feedback on preparatory work undertaken for the 15 taught sessions. The early literature review and research protocol assignments are apportioned small weighting, as they are intended to give students early feedback before preparation of the dissertation and preparation. Students will also be afforded opportunities to receive feedback on draft work prior to the submission of the dissertation.
