Applicants must have completed 2 years of undergraduate medical training at the University of Leeds or as part of an equivalent programme of medical training at another University and be registered for the Intercalated BSc Applied HealthThis module is not approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module offers students an introduction to methods and theories concerning education and learning. Drawing upon a range of methods already in use by teaching staff, students will also be introduced to a range of innovative teaching practice and the theories behind them, including use of creative arts in education, technology enhanced learning and patient involvement.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will have:-demonstrated how to formulate learning objectives appropriate to the learner’s situation
-developed an appreciation of a range of theories of learning and teaching and be able to draw on them in practice
-debated the value of different approaches to teaching and learning according to the individual, group and the context
-identified and demonstrate the communication skills required for educating both students (peers) and patients
-demonstrated the principles of effective feedback
-identified the principles of evaluation and assessment
-explored the ways in which creative arts can be used to enhance learning
-identified the challenges associated with introducing innovations into medical curricula
-recognise the different technologies that can be introduced to enhance learning and the range of contexts in which they can be deployed
-critically evaluated the contribution of innovations in medical education to formal and informal learning within a ‘blended learning’ approach
Learning outcomes
Students will understand that individuals and groups may have different approaches to learning and recognise the challenges this poses for educators. They will start to develop a critical knowledge of different learning theories, and learn about the concept and practice of ‘blended learning’. Students will be introduced to a variety of innovations in learning and teaching with application to medical education, and will gain knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of each innovation and the dilemmas and challenges involved in introducing new method of teaching into curricula. The module will also develop skills of critical reflection and independent learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Contributions in seminars, tutorial discussions feedback provided in teaching sessions. Students are also provided with written feedback the week after their taught sessions which enables them to draw upon the recommendations for future practice in the written element of their assessment.Methods of assessment

Students are required to pass both elements of the coursework. No compensation offered between components. The teaching skills assessment in December may take place online if face to face restrictions remain in place.
