Module summary

A problem based design studio module with a number of projects which challenge the student to apply and combine their skills and learning from this module and another modules to develop and communicate creative solutions to complex problems.

Objectives

This module introduces key design methods and assesses students ability to apply their learning from across the course through practical design work.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Outline factors influencing the choice of materials and process selection and their importance in design and apply scientific principles to determine the optimum materials and processes of manufacture for a range of existing products and new designs;
2. Communicate conceptual and detail design ideas (including tolerancing information for manufacturing) by means of sketches, CAD and DTP software;
3. Communicate conceptual and detail design ideas by means of multimedia software;
4. Use and develop frameworks to identify and describe emerging sociocultural trends, including sustainability, and understand the relevance of such to the designer;
5. Design electro-mechanical products utilising standard and/or specialised parts in response to specific design constraints;
6. Produce fit for purpose 3D models, using CAD software, that are suitable for downstream manufacturing processes such as CNC machining and rapid prototyping;
7. Create realistic working prototypes suitable for presentation using available resources as appropriate;
8. Recognise and discuss standard theory related to design aesthetics and apply specific elements in their own work;
9. Appreciate the factors that can effect team performance.
10. Students will continue to operate effectively as a member of a small collocated team and present their design work orally using audio visual aids where appropriate.

Syllabus

This module will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in level 1 and provide opportunity for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. This will include:
- Advanced CAD and presentation skills- modelling, rendering, animation;
- Application of learning from other modules to design projects;
- Ethical considerations in product design;
-Team performance issues;
- Trend forecasting and sustainable design;
- Usability testing;
- Affective engineering; and
- Portfolio Development and Presentation.
This is the level 2 project core through which students will draw together learning form a range of disciplines and apply it to design projects.
Projects in 4 areas will be typically be completed:
- live industry project
- sustainability and radical design
- design triad and design for manufacture
- prototyping and communication

Private study

Independent online learning is carried out with the Kansei software introduced by Simon Schutte.
Private study is carried out within each of the design projects and are independently led by the students.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

An online discussion board will be monitored during specified times each week, plus design reviews and interactive activities.

Any resit will take the form of a single design project undertaken during the August resit period, with an academically equivalent brief to the previous projects. This will allow the student to demonstrate their learning from the module against the learning outcomes through a single portfolio and prototype, but due to the nature of resits will not include team working elements.
