Objectives

The objectives of this module are:

1. To expand creative capacity and to encourage the development of innovations using theoretically based exercises, and to apply these tools and techniques in a design challenge.
2. To undertake detailed background research and analysis on an innovative mass-produced product or a product category, and to propose and to communicate possibly future innovation.
3. To develop skills in freeform solid modelling using a CAD system.
4. To demonstrate an understanding of the strengths and limitations of manufacturing processes that are commonly used in consumer products, and to design products/parts that are suitable for specific processes.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To identify and to utilise creative thinking skills in the design process.
2. To identify basic theories of creative thinking.
3. To apply the skills of creativity in the exploration of problems.
4. To develop visualisation skills as an aid to creativity.
5. To conduct background research on product innovation in the marketplace.
6. To analyse historical development of an innovation and identify its key enabling features.
7. To propose and to communicate possible future development of an innovation.
8. To use a CAD system to produce 3D solid model with freeform geometry.
9. To apply freeform modelling techniques to your own designs.
10. To demonstration an understanding of manufacturing processes by analysing exiting products/parts.
11. To produce detailed designs of products/parts that are suitable for specific manufacturing processes.
12. To communicate using sketches your own designs while ensuring manufacturability.
