Module summary

This module will introduce you to foundational concepts and skills you will need as a Theatre & Performance student. It will introduce you to the practice of research and scholarship at the University of Leeds, and will feature a combination of online materials, lectures and workshop sessions designed to prepare you for practical work in our theatre spaces, including health and safety procedures, access and use of equipment, as well as core digital literacy skills, etc.

Objectives

- To introduce the key study, research and management skills that form the foundation of the BA Theatre & Performance programme.
- To enable students to make effective use of Library and electronic research resources, identify appropriate materials for different types of research and study tasks, and evaluate their usefulness.
- To allow a smooth transition between prior learning experiences and University-level study by developing a clear understanding of the nature and scope of independent learning and research-led teaching, as well how to make best use of available learning opportunities.
- To prepare students for practical work in the School’s theatre spaces by developing production management skills, including health and safety procedures, risk assessments, access to and use of equipment.
- To enable students to explore, consider, and discuss digital learning at the University of Leeds, and to build a foundation of digital literacy and awareness that will help them succeed with their studies and enhance their graduate prospects.
- To introduce students to strategies of online scholarship, research and collaboration, and to prepare students for using online resources within and beyond the University to enhance their blended learning experience.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the particular opportunities and challenges of studying Theatre & Performance at University level with its focus on independent learning and research-led teaching.
2. Navigate the physical Library and other research resources as well as make effective use of the online catalogues and electronic resources.
3. Identify, locate and evaluate the quality of different research materials that appropriate to different research and study tasks.
4. Evaluate health and safety implications of working in a professional theatre environment, and complete appropriate risk assessments
5. Access appropriate specialist equipment and associated technical support in the School’s theatre spaces.
6. Navigate and use University online platforms and systems for student education
7. Use, critique and evaluate digital learning tools, online library search tools and external web resources
8. Demonstrate enhanced awareness of issues of intellectual property, academic integrity and online behaviour especially as they influence scholarly progress and identity


Syllabus

The module will introduce the key skills and knowledges that will form the foundation of future study on the BA Theatre & Performance programme. It will feature lectures on core topics such as using the Library for research, managing the transition to a University learning environment, how to make the most of assessment and examination opportunities, accessing and using specialist theatre equipment and spaces, health and safety procedures and risk assessments, etc. Opportunities for hands-on experience of these will be provided through additional practical sessions. These will be combined with online learning tasks focused on introducing blended learning and digital platforms at Leeds, online library and archives, using online technology in projects and learning, academic integrity, research and referencing, etc.

Private study

Students will spend 100 hours working through the module content, of which 50 hours will be spent on working through online learning materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, and the remainder on production management activities within PCI, along with an appropriate range of readings to provide a larger context of theory and practice. Whilst some of the online student activities will be individual, some give the student the opportunity to enter into collaborative online discussion, debate and content creation. Private study time will be required for students to prepare for online tasks to test learning, and critical writing exercises.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each student will be expected to make contributions to discussion forums at regular, undertake online tutorials, complete quizzes and individual/group writing activities. Each student’s contribution to all of these steps will be recorded and monitored within the VLE. Overview, feedback and guidance will be provided by tutors, who will also act as points of contact to ensure the quality and appropriateness of online participation and exchange.
