Syllabus

5 x 1 hour lectures – weeks 1 -5:

Ethics of performance – e.g. audience/artist relationships in immersive, participatory, post-dramatic forms

Politics of performance – e.g. place/performance/possibility, context specific performance, socially engaged performance, notions of community and ‘voice’.

Aesthetics of contemporary performance – e.g. representations of the ‘real’, inter-textual and multi-media influences, intercultural influences.

Documentation of performance – e.g. documentation of practice, ‘liveness’, practice-as-research.

Values of performance – e.g. examining how notions of ‘value’ and ‘excellence’ and ‘creativity’ and ‘impact’ shape how we think about performance.

Workshops –10 x 3hr staff-led workshops per set which introduce key concepts and understanding through practice and which allow students to use these to develop original material. Normally these workshops will be informed by practice-based research or practical expertise in PCI - for example, physical performer, applied performance, scenography, text.

Mid-way through the semester, the emphasis shifts from tutor-led to student-led, so that students can develop a practical response to a creative brief which tests and extends their practice as individuals whilst working in a small-group context. Here weekly showings of practice and discussion and verbal feedback from tutors and peers will structure and support this phase. This leads towards a final showing in week 11.

The final phase of the module asks students to reflect on their practice in the light of key points of debate highlighted in the lectures.
