Successful completion of all pass for progression modules in Level 2 of: BSc Psychology or MPsyc, BSc Advanced Psychology, BA Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Thought (and its International and Industrial variants) or BSc Psychology with Education (and its International and Industrial variants)

Objectives

This module aims to provide in depth coverage of empirical, conceptual and theoretical issues relating to 'Drug Addiction'. The module will be taught by an expert in the subject.
Students will continue to develop their knowledge in this area of the discipline with particular emphasis on relevant research.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this advanced module is to present a contemporary and integrated perspective on the relationships between neurobiological and psychological theories of drug addiction. Many of the key issues within the field of drug addiction will be explored.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- address current debates in drug addiction;
- critically evaluate theories of addiction and related evidence;
- discuss and consider the critical psychological concepts of addiction in terms of neurobiological substrates.


Syllabus

The lectures will focus on three areas of drug addiction research:
1) risk factors in the susceptibility to substance abuse;
2) theories of drug addiction;
3) treatment of drug addiction.

Each topic will be reviewed in depth focusing on key psychological concepts and their putative neurobiological substrates. In addition contemporary research techniques and findings will be considered and assessed.
