Module summary

The dissertation is a piece of written work of 10,000 to 12,000 words focused on a research topics of your own choice within the area of the degree programme. The dissertation must be based on the independent analysis of primary and/or secondary quantitative data using statistical modelling or other methods commensurate to those covered in the modules SLSP3065 and LAW3287.

Objectives

Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of a specific sociology or social policy module as well as the ability to design a piece of quantitative analysis from data collection/collation to analytical modelling and write-up.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will present a dissertation which demonstrates their ability to:

1. ndependently formulate and research a sociology/social policy question;
2. show their in-depth knowledge and understanding of sociological debates in their chosen topic of enquiry;
3. evaluate the sociological debates and/or empirical evidence and methods they have used in the dissertation;
4. carry out independent quantitative research using primary or secondary data into a topic in the field of sociology/social policy

Syllabus

The dissertatin is on as subject of the student's choice, providing that it falls within the objectives fot he programme in which the module is used. The sociological and social policy content shall be negotiated between the student and their supervisor.
