Module summary

This module introduces students to the core elements of environmental contracts as well as the more practical aspects associated to this type of contracts such as responding to tenders, developing proposals and implementing projects. The module includes practical exercises as well as guest lectures from environmental consultants working on the field. As part of this module, students will work in groups to develop a proposal in response to a tender allowing them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive as a sustainability consultant.

Objectives

- Understand the mechanisms of developing and managing an environmental contract;
- Evaluate and respond appropriately to environmental tenders and calls;
- Understand client and stakeholder management concepts in the environmental arena;
- Develop contracts into projects: proposal and budget development and management
- Develop contracts into projects: people and resources utilisation

Learning outcomes
- Understand the purpose of contracts
- The mechanisms for developing, scoping and managing an environmental contract
- How to develop a project proposal in response to environmental tenders and contracts, including creating limits to scope
- Law and contractual considerations
- How to manage client and stakeholder relationships during contracts
- That environmental consultancy contracts are fulfilled by applying and managing resources through effective contract and project management processes

- Overview of environmental contract types
- The contract process; from idea to invoice
- The basics of client management and business development
- Responding to calls; environmental contract writing and presentation skills
- Environmental law and contractual considerations
- Understanding time and resource management, with environmental case studies
- Budgets and billing
- Managing the contract: project management experience in the environmental arena
- Practical project - development of project proposal, costs and expected outcome of a consultancy project in an environmental case study
