Module summary

This module provides you with the opportunity to complete an original geophysical research project. It will develop your powers of scientific observation and analysis, capabilities of interpreting and presenting results and discussing them in the context of previous work in the field.In general, independent geophysical projects are based on a set of observations that you have collected yourself or have been provided by your supervisor. It could be from a fieldwork survey, laboratory experiment, numerical modelling or data bank. You will be responsible for the quality control, processing and interpretation the data set. Other projects involve writing and running a computer program to solve a theoretical problem.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this module are to teach students how to perform research and communicate it to other people.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Perform a critical analysis of the current literature on a particular topic.
2. Perform data analysis and interpretation at a level beyond that of coursework to produce a piece of scientific work capable of inclusion for publication.
3. Manage a geophysical research project, self-motivate and work to a deadline.
4. Present the results of a geophysical research project in the proper manner.

Private study

You will be expected to work on your independent geophysical project during both semesters, handing in your dissertation following the Easter break. It is an extremely important part of your final year, being worth 40 credits and pass for progression. 40 credits are equivalent to about 400 hours of work, which equates to about 14 hours per week, every week, from the first week of Semester 1 and the end of the Easter break.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

You will receive on-going feedback on your research, during your regular meeting with your project supervisor.

There are also four formative assessments, on which you will receive feedback:

1. Project outline
2. Progress presentation
3. Dissertation completion plan
4. Viva
