Module replaces

SOEE5723M Applied Structural Models

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Undertaken a robust interpretation of seismic reflection data and understand its limitations
- discuss the main theoretical models that are applied to understanding 3-dimensional structural geology;
- compare and contrast the understanding of fold development from a geometric and geomechanical standpoint;
- apply appropriate theoretical structural models to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of folds and fault arrays;
- integrate theoretical models with a suite of data sets (including reflection seismic, well data and outcrop data) to analyse a variety of structural styles;
- develop and apply strategies, including restorations techniques and uncertainty considerations, to validate structural interpretations.

Syllabus

- Course introduction;
- Introduction to interpretation of seismic reflection data.
- Theoretical models of the geometric and geomechanical analysis of folds;
- Theoretical structural models that explain the relationship between folds and faults (including spatial and temporal variations in 3D fault evolution; fault populations;
- Inversion tectonics; salt tectonics);
- Expression of folds and faults in reflection seismic data;
- Aplication of theoretical models to seismic reflection data in: compressional;
- Extensional; inversion;
- Salt and strike-slip settings;
- Integration of field observations with structural models.
- Understand the application of sequence stratigraphy into a basin context

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Feedback in practical classes and coursework.
- In class and private study comparison of coursework with worked examples; comparison of assessed practicals with worked examples; assessed coursework.
- Fieldnote books will be reviewed.
