Module summary

The module will begin with a consideration of pre-Colombian America, before turning to the formation of a single Spanish State in 1476 and the expansion of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. The module will conclude its focus on Latin America in the early nineteenth century (on the eve of the struggles for independence) and end in late nineteenth century Spain. Questions of unity and diversity, of freedom and repression, of identity and ideology will be paramount in the treatment of the historical events considered. The impact of Spain on America and of America on Spain will be a major consideration in dealing with the creation and continuation of one of the world's greatest empires.

Knowledge of the arrival of Modernity to the Ibero-American Worl
Advanced analytical and writing skills by reviewing academic books
Team-work developed via collective seminar presentations

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should:
- have a good understanding of the main lines of development of the Hispanic world on both sides of the Atlantic and be able to undertake more advanced study of Spanish and/or Latin American history;
- be able to relate cultural and social manifestations to their historical context and use the knowledge gained to develop skills in constructing reasoned interpretative arguments.
