Module summary
This module provides application of specific knowledge and a structure for practical skill development for the use of ultrasound in gynaecological ultrasound examinations. This module allows the student to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the co-requisite modulesObjectives
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate mastery in acquiring, Evaluation and reporting gynaecological ultrasound examinations and achieve competence to practise as an ultrasound practitioner.Learning outcomes
Demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and techniques relevant to gynaecological ultrasound
Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of gynaecological ultrasound practice
Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating to gynaecological ultrasound (CAHPR Research Practitioner's Framework, 2019; SCoR, 2016)
To take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others
Demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations
Reflect critically on practice and the role of medical ultrasound in the management of the gynaecological patient
Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:-
Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need for gynaecological ultrasound and select an appropriate technique
Acquire, interpret and report gynaecological ultrasound examinations competently
Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required
Critically evaluate ultrasound examinations for technical and diagnostic quality
Assess and respond to an individual’s physical and psychological care needs during the ultrasound examination

Applied Abdominal and Pelvic Anatomy and Patho-physiology, Embryology and Physiology of the Reproductive Process,
Scanning Methods, Techniques and Measurements for Pelvic and Renal Ultrasound,
Ultrasound appearances of the Female Genitourinary System, Gynaecological Pathology, Menstrual cycle, hormones, appearances and measurements, anatomy, anatomical and age variations
Privacy and dignity (related to intimate examinations), communication, confidentiality, consent, chaperones, infection control and allergies. (also Female Genital Mutilation
Pharmacological agents- use and effects on U/S appearances
Ultrasound-Directed Procedures in Ultrasound Practice,
Principles of Doppler Imaging,
Use and Applications of Ultrasound Contrast Agents, 3D and Doppler
Complementary Imaging and alternative gynaecological investigations
Gynaecological Ultrasound protocols, patient consent, chaperoning, intimate examinations
Ultrasound techniques - transabdominal technique, transvaginal technique
2D/3D/4D techniques
introduction to renal ultrasound technique
Normal ultrasound appearances of the non-pregnant female pelvis
Normal anatomy/variants of the female pelvic organs and structures including age-related appearances to include cervix, uterus, ovaries and adnexa
Abnormal ultrasound appearances to include-
Cervix - benign and non-benign appearances
Uterus - uterine disease – benign, non-benign, inflammatory
Ovaries - simple and complex pathology, polycystic ovaries
Adnexae - pelvic abscess, PID, endometriosis,
Infective processes, Inflammatory processes
The role of ultrasound in gynaecological screening
The role of ultrasound in post-menopausal bleeding
The use of ultrasound in reproductive medicine
The application of ultrasound contrast media in gynaecology

Private study to include: e-learning; literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation and critical evaluation of patient-based case report for summative assessment; maintenance of clinical learning record. Clinical simulationOpportunities for Formative Feedback
Students and their clinical mentors are encouraged to use the formative clinical and academic assessment process regularly throughout the module to develop self-assessment skills and to generate formative feedback identifying student progress and where additional learning and skill development is required.Students will undertake a formative EDIE and will receive detailed feedback on their performance with advice re: how to improve.
Peer and tutor feedback also given in case study discussions, assessment preparation seminars/practicals and tutor feedback on draft assignments. 2 x formative clinical assessments
