Module summary

This module allows students to negotiate their academic and clinical learning via a learning contract which specifies a focused area of MSK/ Vascular or other negotiated, focused area of Diagnostic Imaging (if agreed by the programme/module team). This module provides the application of specific knowledge and a structure for practical skill development for the use of ultrasound in the students’ specified area. This module allows the student to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the co-requisite modules

Objectives

On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate mastery in acquiring and reporting Diagnostic Imaging examinations within a specified clinical area as outlined within their learning contract

Learning outcomes
Demonstrate an in-depth, specialist knowledge of normal and abnormal appearances and techniques relevant to Diagnostic Imaging as outlined in the student’s learning contract
Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of Diagnostic Imaging practice
Critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and evidence based practice relating to Diagnostic Imaging (CAHPR Research Practitioner's Framework, 2019; SCoR, 2016)
To take a proactive, self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others
Demonstrate effective decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations
Reflect critically on practice and the role of Diagnostic Imaging in the management of the patient as outlined in the students learning contract

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to
- Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need for appropriate imaging and select an appropriate technique
- Acquire, interpret and report appropriate imaging examinations competently
- Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required
- Critically evaluate ultrasound examinations for technical and diagnostic quality
- Assess and respond to an individual’s physical and psychological care needs during the imaging examination.


Syllabus

This module allows students to negotiate their academic and clinical learning via a learning contract which specifies a focussed area of MSK/ Vascular or other negotiated area of Diagnostic Imaging. Examples include: Shoulder MSK; Carotid and DVTs; Early Pregnancy (see obstetric ultrasound syllabus)
Musculoskeletal Syllabus:
Applied musculoskeletal Anatomy and Patho-physiology
Scanning Methods,
Techniques and Measurements,
Principles of Power Doppler and Colour Flow Mapping,
Ultrasound Appearances, including Normal Anomalous Appearances and the Appearances of Common Pathological Processes,
Complementary Imaging.
Vascular Syllabus:
Applied Vascular Abdominal, Pelvic and Patho-physiology,
Principles of Continuous and Pulsed Wave Doppler Imaging,
Principles of Power Doppler and Colour Flow Mapping,
Volume Flow Measurements,
Haemodynamics,
Scanning Methods, Techniques and Measurements for Vascular Ultrasound,
Clinical Applications (lower limb vasculature, upper limb vasculature, abdominal applications, intra- and extra-cranial carotid vasculature),
Complementary Imaging.
Other areas of practice may be agreed with the programme/module leader

Private study

Private study to include: e-learning; literature searches, seminar and assessment preparation, independent supporting investigation and critical evaluation of patient-based case report for summative assessment; maintenance of clinical learning record. Clinical simulation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students and their clinical mentors are encouraged to use the formative clinical and academic assessment process regularly throughout the module to develop self-assessment skills and to generate formative feedback identifying student progress and where additional learning and skill development is required.
Students will undertake a formative EDIE and will receive detailed feedback on their performance with advice re: how to improve.
Peer and tutor feedback also given in case study discussions, assessment preparation seminars/practicals and tutor feedback on draft assignments.2 x formative clinical assessments
