Module summary

This module provides underpinning theoretical specialist ultrasound knowledge to facilitate the use of science and technology of ultrasound in a wide range of clinical settings

Objectives

On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the application of science and technology in ultrasound for a range of clinical settings

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate, synthesise and apply knowledge of the scientific and technological principles and processes of diagnostic ultrasound critically describing their relevance to the ultrasound image and the equipment utilised
- Demonstrate proficiency in critically evaluating ultrasound images and Doppler outputs
- Critically evaluate and debate the safety issues related to diagnostic ultrasound to enable optimal use of the equipment within the current, internationally recognised recommendations for safe practice actively reducing any hazard to patient and staff
- Critically appraise current ultrasound equipment, latest technology and associated quality assurance procedures
- Use graphical and numerical data commensurate with current ultrasound practice

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to
- Critically appraise literature
- Critically evaluate the application of science and technology in a clinical setting
- Demonstrate knowledge of the physical principles of ultrasound to clinical practice/setting

• Principles of Ultrasonic Imaging,
Ultrasound and its Propagation in Tissue,
Image Generation,
Ultrasound Artefacts,
Principles of Doppler Ultrasound,
Development of Ultrasound Imaging Technology,
Equipment Choice and Manipulation,
Equipment Appraisal and Evaluation,
Image Recording, Ultrasound Bio-effects and Quality Assurance. These are to be linked to image acquisition/optimisation and interpretation
