Module summary

This module will introduce students to the principles of research and evidence based clinical practice.It will equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop a research, service evaluation or practice development proposal for investigating a clinical problem in an area of diagnostic imaging relevant to their own professional practice.

Objectives

To provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of research, service evaluation or practice development methodologies that underpin evidence based practice and explore how quantitative and qualitative data can be collected and analysed.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to select a clinical or professional topic for investigation and:
- demonstrate the principles required to critically evaluate literature on the selected topic;
- critically analyse and debate the requirements needed to undertake a quantitative or qualitative investigation of the selected topic;
- justify the collection and analysis of quantitative or qualitative data to explore the topic; and
- suggest how their findings might inform evidence based practice in their own domain of diagnostic imaging.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to
- Critically appraise literature
- Understand different research methodologies


Syllabus

Identifying investigable problems

Literature review - searching, critical appraisal, data extraction, synthesis and critical analysis

Research, service evaluation and practice development projects:
- methodologies currently used in clinical imaging practice;
- qualitative, quantitative and systematic review project designs;
- sampling and recruitment strategies;
- principles and methods for quantitative and qualitative data collection; design and testing of data collection instruments;
- principles and methods for quantitative and qualitative data analysis; introduction to data handling software – Endnote, RevMan, SPSS, Nvivo.
- ethics, governance and project approval.

Project proposal – no more than 4 pages of project proposal /study protocol submitted at the end of November. Literature Review - Critical appraisal of 5 key papers relevant to investigation proposal to be submitted at the end of January.
