Objectives
On completion of this module students will have an awareness of the chemical and process engineering sector and be able to apply their knowledge to solve problems relating to process engineering, reaction engineering, energy and environmental impact.Learning outcomes
- Have a knowledge and understanding of the role of a chemical engineer and the impact of chemical engineering in the 21st century.
- Understand the principles of chemical reaction and reactor engineering: kinetic performances in batch and continuous operation, and criteria for process selection.
- Understand the principles of risk assessment and of safety management, and be able to apply techniques for the assessment and abatement of process and product hazards.
- Understand the principles of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) and be able apply techniques for analysing, throughout the lifecycle, the interaction of process, product, and plant with the environment.
- Understand the importance of identifying the objectives and the context of the design in terms of the business requirements, the technical requirements, sustainable development, safety, health and environmental issues.
- Understand the main methods of minimising environmental impact on land, air, water.
- Understand methods of assessing environmental impact.
- Have a knowledge of the local legislative framework and how it is applied to the management of health and environment.
- Be able to work in a team and understand and manage the process of: peer challenge; planning; prioritising and organizing team activity.
Skills outcomes
Ability to present and critically analyse the content of an environmental impact assessment;
Ability to apply a range of skills to a variety of process engineering techniques and related environmental impacts;
Critical reasoning;
IT skills;
Research skills using a range of information sources.
