Module replaces
CAPE5311M Chemical Reaction ProcessesThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
- In-depth understanding of ideal reactors;- Understanding of elementary reactions, stoichiometry and reaction rates;
- To provide a thorough grounding in performance evaluation, selection, design, batch, continuous stirred tank and plug flow reactors;
- To generate reaction rate expressions from experimental data;
- To provide a basis for the reactor design aspects of the Design Project module.
Learning outcomes
Students will attain an appreciation of:
1. reaction kinetics and mechanisms;
2. distinctive features of batch and ideal continuous reactors;
3. considerations of reactor evaluation, batch and ideal continuous reactors, selection and design.
Skills outcomes
- Development of an ability to analyse reaction and reactor systems.
- Development of problem solving abilities, e.g. by conducting appropriate performance evaluation, to determine the key parameters of reactor and reaction kinetics.
Syllabus
Topics Include:
- Stoichiometry, reaction order, reaction rate.
- Elementary reaction, reaction kinetics and mechanism, activation energy.
- Integral and differential analysis of rate equations.
- Batch, continuous stirred tank and plug flow reactors.
- Select and apply appropriate performance equations.
- Multiple reactions and product distributions.
- Temperature, reversible reaction equilibrium.
- Isothermal and adiabatic operation and heat transfer considerations.
- Packed bed catalytic reactors.
