Module summary
This module is designed to engage students with the principles of photographic practice, history and theory. It will enable them to interrogate the development of photographic practices in terms of aesthetic and stylistic traditions, key historical and technological characteristics and develop elements of visual critical analysis. Students will combine the study of photographic history and theoretical approaches with a developing focus on digital photographic techniques.Objectives
The key objectives of this module are to:1. Broaden student knowledge of the history and theory of photography.
2. Develop an understanding of its place within cultural discourses.
3. Develop strategies for reading photographic texts and the ability to offer critically and aesthetically informed critiques.
4. To further develop key skills in relation to the capture and post-production of digital photographs.
Learning outcomes
The key knowledge outcomes are the ability to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of photographic history and theory.
2. Contextualise and situate the photographic image.
3. Critically engage with photographic images using analytical strategies.
4. Begin investigating photography theory using your developing creative practice.
5. Produce and edit digital images to an intermediate level.

Private study
Throughout the course of this module students will be engaged in guided reading andpractice based exercises, leading to two summative pieces of work. A large proportion of this time will be spent developing practical skills, supported by workshop sessions.
Research / Reading 40 hours; Practice 75 hours; Editing 50 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be monitored via the formative and summative assessment process, receiving feedback at each stage. They will also be monitored via the tutorial and practical sessions as they develop their submissions.Methods of assessment
