Pre-requisite qualifications
All applicants must be registered with the GMC and have a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in hospital or community paediatrics. Participants must maintain a minimum of 16 hours clinical work a week throughout the course.Module replaces

Module summary
Provides the students with an evidenced and critical perspective of child public health and it’s determinants both in the UK and globally, with a focus on the most important current and future child public health challenges.Objectives
By the end of this module, students will:- be able to describe basic epidemiological concepts which are relevant to child health
- be familiar with common sources of child health data, how they may be accessed and the existing constraints on their use
- describe in detail the theory and practice of promoting change in health related behaviours
- be able to describe the implications of poverty, inequality and social disadvantage for child health
- be familiar with the current UK immunisation programme, planned changes and current challenges to its effectiveness
- critically appraise the evidence base and current strategies for child injury prevention
- be able to describe the principles of population screening and recent changes in the UK screening programmes affecting children and young people
- recognise the main issues for international child health, particularly in economically poor countries
- be able to summarise the current and potential impact of climate change on child health
- complete a PowerPoint presentation for a lay audience about a local geographical area
Learning outcomes
- to describe the concept of child health and its relation to children’s rights
- to provide an overview to evidence the links between poverty and child health
- to identify the potential, and the limitations, of medical interventions and advocacy for child health
- to critically evaluate current major issues in international child health (in low and middle income countries) and their implications for children’s health in this country and elsewhere
Skills outcomes
Advocate social and population intervention for the benefit of child health nationally and internationally, including maternal health impacts on the child.
Develop a sense of global awareness and responsibility with regard to working in a child health setting.
Syllabus
This module considers preventive medicine, ambulatory paediatrics and education and health in schools. Topics covered include child health surveillance, immunisation and screening programmes, poverty and child health, international child health and epidemiology. Students are required to undertake access public health data for a defined geographic patch in which they are working, analyse the data and identify local health priorities. They are then required to produce a powerpoint presentation for a local audience outlining evidence based public health strategies which could be implemented locally to address the identified priorities.
