Module summary

This module aims to develop and expand practical skills acquired in Level 1 and will focus on structured pattern making and garment construction. Individual 2D designs will be realised in 3D product. Manufacturing methodology and terminology will be documented, all within industrial standards.

Objectives

This module aims to develop and expand practical skills gained in Level 1 and will focus on structured pattern making for woven, nonwoven or knitted garment construction, manufacturing methods and terminology, all within industrial standards.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
1 Demonstrate research methods, analysis and information skills creatively and with individual expression within technical and commercial parameters;
2 Create original garment samples in woven, nonwoven or knit that are well conceived, executed and presented, fulfilling the requirements of a given brief;
3 Demonstrate a sound understanding of how garments are constructed and manufactured creatively and commercially;
4 Demonstrate effective communication & presentation skills;
5 Rationalise efficient time management skills, critical awareness and work effectively both individually and as a team member.

Syllabus

This module will consolidate working methods acquired previously in Level 1. It aims to develop and expand practical skills and will focus on structured pattern making for garment construction, students individual 2D designs will be realised in 3D product. Manufacturing methodology and technical knowledge will be documented in a personal journal.

Private study

Students are asked to engage with recommended reading which enhances their understanding of work completed during taught sessions and with the research, analysis and construction notes which are all part of the Product Research Journal. Students are asked to research and analyse a range of contemporary and historic garments, and to include construction and fabric content through primary and secondary research. Students are also required to produce a feedback log and action on a weekly basis. Students should present this work in a professional style with appropriate visual communication and referencing.
